USCET’s Most Recent Featured Author Helen Zia Wins the 2018 AAAS Lifetime Achievement Award

USCET congratulates Chinese American journalist and writer Helen Zia on being selected this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner. Zia is one of the featured authors in USCET’s ongoing Asian American Author Series.

In 2017, USCET invited Zia to speak at a number of locations in China including at InfoUSA@BFSU in Beijing, Sichuan University and Sichuan Normal University in Chengdu, and New York University Shanghai.



USCET’s COS Portfolio Continued to Support Rural Chinese Students and their Academic Studies this Past Year

The 2017 China Opportunity Scholarship (COS) portfolio continued to successfully promote equal access to higher education in China and help equip disadvantaged students with the tools needed to thrive in college and beyond by providing scholarships to low-income and disadvantaged students. This past year, USCET supported nearly 30 students through its four active scholarship programs. Overall, since COS began in 2007 USCET has supported more than 160 students from rural China.


USCET Wraps up Fall Programs in China

The US-China Education Trust (USCET) recently came back from a visit to China, where two of its major programs concluded for 2017 in Shanghai and Wuhan. USCET held a Data Journalism Workshop at Fudan University, and co-organized the annual Media Education Consortium (MEC) Conference at Wuhan University, where the winners of the Third Data Journalism Competition were announced.


Data Journalism Workshop Begins at Fudan University

The US-China Education Trust (USCET) and Fudan University’s School of Journalism kicked off the Third Data Journalism Workshop in Shanghai earlier this week.

Jonathan Soma, Director of Lede Data Journalism Program at Columbia University and Yu Yan are leading the workshop in China. Participants will learn the fundamentals of data journalism and will gain skills in how best to use data in their journalism work.


Ambassador Bloch Discusses Exchange at the Alliance for International Exchange’s Annual Meeting

The international exchange community gathered in late October to discuss the current state of the field and ways to move forward in the coming year. The Alliance for International Exchange’s Annual Meeting featured an array of policy discussions, information and strategy trainings, and networking opportunities for its members across the exchange community. Key government agencies, including the US Department of State, were well represented.



USCET Completed China's first Data Journalism Bootcamp!

USCET just completed a 5-week intensive data journalism boot camp at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School on August 24! This comprehensive summer program is the first of its kind in China. Thirty journalists and students were selected from over 80 applicants from across the country. The participants, through participatory methodologies, learned how to gather large quantities of data, clean and organize the data using sophisticated coding system, interpret and find newsworthy stories within the numbers, and bring the numbers to life through images and interactive visualizations.



Ambassador Bloch Recognized at White House Celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Vice President Mike Pence hosted a reception at the White House on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.  Speakers included Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao and Acting Assistant Secretary of East Asia and the Pacific Susan Thornton.  USCET President Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch was acclaimed as the first Asian American ambassador in U.S. history.
