Program Description

2004 marked the 20th Anniversary of the founding of the American Studies Center of Sichuan University, which had its official debut in May 1984, simultaneously with the establishment of the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu. U.S. Vice President George Bush was present at the Inauguration Ceremony of the American Studies Center, and afterwards gave an important talk to the university faculty and students. The past 20 years have witnessed the steadfast and sound development of this Center. So far the Center has hosted, either in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu or independently, five Sino-U.S. Symposia on different fields in American Studies, including American literature, religion, economics, government and politics, rule of law, etc. Each time, the Center invited more than 10 American Fulbright professors teaching in China and many Chinese scholars nationwide to conduct in depth discussions and exchange views.

Situated in the College of Foreign Languages & Cultures, Sichuan University, the Center has members from diverse departments and schools of the University, including the English Department, the Department of World Literature & Comparative Literature, the History Department, the Law School, the Institute of Religion, and the Economics Department. Most of the Center’s members are professors or associate professors, and about a dozen have studied in American universities as Fulbright Scholars. Others studied in the United States for different periods of time and with different programs. Over 20 books and countless papers have been published, covering various areas of American Studies. The Center encourages academic research in American Studies, promoting exchange and cooperation between the two peoples and the two countries so as to contribute to the further development of friendly, stable and sound Sino-U.S. relations.
